Julia Parker is the author of a monthly online article Veg on the Ledge for LEON. She runs popular fruit and veg growing courses from her home in Sussex teaching people how to get the best from their patch however big or small (Parkers Patch). As well as her workshops and webinars, she visits local schools to talk about the fun of growing something easy and tasty from seed. Julia moved from London with her family to Sussex 15 years ago giving her licence to turn a neglected walled garden back into a productive patch.

Ghillie James is the author of four popular books including the bestselling seasonal cookbook Jam, Jelly and Relish and health-conscious global cookbook Grains are Good. She was the food editor at Sainsbury’s Magazine for five years and now writes for a variety of publications including The Boston Globe and The Straits Times, Singapore. Her recipes have been featured in many newspapers and magazines including Stella, You, BBC Good Food, Waitrose Weekend, Sainsbury’s Magazine, Hello, The Week and The Sunday Telegraph. She has appeared on a variety of radio programmes including BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, and BBC Radio London’s Gaby Roslin Show.

This dynamic team first worked together on the Tesco Food Magazine and have relished teaming up again to write The Little Grower’s Cookbook to share their love of kids, nature, gardening and healthy eating.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A game-changing book of simple and sustainable gardening activities, recipes and weekend fun for every season all bringing nature closer to home.  Be inspired to help children aged between four to twelve years old learn to play and experiment with nature’s bounty.

The Little Grower’s Cookbook is the perfect way to tempt kids out into the park or garden. The book is divided into four chapters; Gardening Basics; Get Planting (spring, summer, autumn, winter); Get Cooking; Weekend Fun!

The Little Grower’s Cookbook uses repurposed and recycled materials and all the activities are environmentally friendly, for example, one of the garden projects reuses an old hessian bag for life as a herb planter, in another, egg shells are used to sow cress seeds. The weekend fun projects include innovative ideas like creating little pots of sunshine (planting flower seeds in homemade pots); magical flower potions (creating your own flower-scented water); hosting a butterfly banquet to planting your own packed lunch or building a bug hotel. Little Grower’s facts are scattered throughout the book with ideas like growing your own pizza box. There are simple step-by-step instructions and the book is packed with charming photography.

All the delicious recipes can all be made using the produce that the children grow. Discover creative and fun seasonal recipes from Veggie Fries with Pink, Orange or Green Dip; Snail SandwichesMini But Mighty Baked Veggie Bites; Sausage and Veggie Sleepover; Squiggly Noodle Soup to Terrific Traybake Pizza. Cakes and treats to delight range from Magical Chocolate Fudge Cake; Strawberry Butterfly Cakes to Eton Mess Ice Cream Cake.

You don’t need a big garden or a big budget, all of these projects will teach and inspire children to look at what’s around them in the natural world.
